Artist-in-Residence

The PTA hosts an Artist-in-Residence program at RHPS every year, in which children have an intensive weeklong study in the cultural arts. In the past, kids have done a workshop with Bethesda's Imagination Stage, as well as the fantastic So This Is Opera program with opera singer Yvette Lewis. Second graders under Lewis' guidance perform opera for parents in a concert at BCC High School.

Yvette Lewis is a lyric soprano who has performed extensively throughout the world including Washington Opera, Baltimore Opera, Opera Theater of Northern Virginia, and Spoleto Festival in Melbourne, Australia. She currently serves on the White House Commission for Presidential Scholars and the Arts Education in Maryland Schools Board. She performs her children’s operas in more than 150 schools each year and conducts workshops for teachers. She has also taught elementary general music and written music curriculum for Maryland public schools.

The program features operatic arias, storytelling and audience participation. It is accompanied by a teacher guide that includes interdisciplinary and interrelated teaching strategies designed to enhance your student’s appreciation and understanding of opera. Students learn the technical and artistic elements of opera.
