Celebrating Black History Month

Resources on ways to celebrate Black History Month
presented by RHES NAACP Parents’ Council

What is Black History Month?

Black History Month is celebrated every year to highlight the achievements and contributions of African Americans.

How to Celebrate Black History Month at Home?

  1. Explain what Black History month means.
  2. Read books about diversity and black characters as protagonist.
A few books are featured above. YouTube has books read online if you do not have a copy of the book.
  3. Learn history by visiting museums.
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History in Washington, DC has more than 3,500 exhibits available online. You can find a complete list of all the virtual tours offered by Google Arts & Culture.
  4. Teach them about black icons.
    A few featured titles are:
    • Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Doreen Rappaport
    • Counting on Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Saved Apollo 13 by Helaine Becker Moses

Back-to-School Night

Virtual Back-to-School Night (parents only) will take place on Monday, September 13 at 6:30 PM. This event is an opportunity for parents to meet the teachers, learn about the curriculum and important classroom information. This adult only event will be held in-person and you will have the opportunity to hear about the plans and expectations for the year from your child’s teacher.

Individual classroom presentations will occur in two sessions and all teachers will be available for both sessions. Both sessions will be identical and families only need to attend one session. If you have more than one student at Rosemary Hills, you have the opportunity to attend both sessions.

Please note that Back-to-School Night is not a time for individual conferences. Teachers will need to leave promptly at the end of the second session.

Classroom teachers will share their Zoom links with you in a separate email.
